Amelia Musical Playhouse presents The Fantasticks at 1955 Island Walkway, Fernandina Beach, FL 32034. Fantasticks is the longest-running musical in the world. It originally staged in 1960 and ran a total of 42 years. The show revolves around two main themes; the complex bond between parents and maturing children, and, of course, a love story. Complications come in the form of a character named El Gallo, who acts as narrator and scoundrel, and a few cohorts. This lighthearted comedy has the feel of a very modern version of something Shakespeare might have written, minus a bit of the iambic pentameter. Among the many charming and creative songs in the score, the musical standard “Try to Remember” opens the show and invites an intimate look into a world of moonlight and magic. Book and Lyrics were written by Tom Jones and music by Harvey Schmidt.
The show is being directed by Chad Miller, Mary Williams, Amelia Underwood, and music director Lynn Arizzi. In the cast are Finley Ryan, Tom Gray, Jeff Packer, Frank O’Donnell, Bill Mayo, Ron Kurtz, Bob O’Hara, and Sarah and Beth Perkins.
Show dates are April 20, 21, 22 and 27, 28, 29 at 7:30pm with two Sunday matinees on April 23 and 30 at 2:30pm. Tickets are available online at 904tix, or by calling the box office at 904-277-3455.
