Amelia Musical Playhouse Presents A Festival of Gilbert & Sullivan

February 23-25, 2024

Before Taylor Swift… before The Beatles…before Elvis. We had Gilbert & Sullivan. Their comic operettas took the English-speaking world by storm. They heavily influenced the development of modern musical theater. Their works prompted references in literally hundreds of plays, movies, and television shows — including The Producers, Hamilton, The Simpsons and Raiders of the Lost Ark.

And now, Amelia Musical Playhouse will bring highlights of these classic works to Fernandina Beach in a staged concert featuring songs from The Mikado, H.M.S. Pinafore, Pirates of Penzance, and more.

The topsy-turvy program will be hosted by Frank O’Donnell, Amelia Underwood and Jeff Goldberg and feature more than a dozen talented actor-singers.

Be prepared for some tongue-twisting patter songs, beautiful harmonies, and maybe a surprise or two.

Directed by O’Donnell with music direction by Lynn Arizzi.

Back to the 80’s tells the story of the senior class of William Ocean High School, as remembered through the eyes of now thirty-something Corey Palmer. Seventeen-year-old Corey is madly in love with his next-door neighbor, Tiffany Houston, one of the coolest girls in the school, but she is too busy mooning over Michael Feldman, the hottest guy around. Michael and his friends are athletic and good looking – the kind of guys that Corey and his two best friends dream of being. However, while they may not be the coolest guys in school, they are still one up on Feargal McFerrin, Ill, whose best friend is his computer and who believes the crazy notion that one day, CDs will replace cassette tapes.

Featuring a cast of 30 AMP teens and adults plus a live pit band, full of fabulous dance numbers choreographed by Kristin Bean. You will recognize every one of the 20+ iconic 80’s hits in the show, like Love Shack, 500 Miles, Centerfold, Man in the Mirror, Time of My Life, Material Girl, and many more.

The members of Amelia Musical Playhouse are paying tribute to the late musician by sharing some back stories and performing some of Buffett’s best known hits.

You don’t have to live in Key West to know that Jimmy Buffett was a beloved songwriter and gifted performer who not only wrote great songs, but created an entire culture. His most famous venture, Margaritaville, expanded from a single song to a global brand encompassing restaurants, hotels, and merchandise, turning the laid-back island vibe into a multi-million dollar empire. “Parrotheads” are encouraged to wear their tropical best and join us as we celebrate Buffett’s legacy.

The show features many of AMP’s regulars, including Jill Dillingham, Chad Miller, Jeff Thomas, Bob O’Hara, Jimmy Kalista, Jeff Goldberg and Bill Ivins. In addition to those performers, the band will also feature Mark Gulledge on drums, and special guest “Hotshot” Carter on Pedal Steel Guitar. There are many additional singers and guitarists lending a hand, and even a trio of ladies called the “Reeferettes.”

The show is co-hosted by Donna Lewis and Bill Ivins, and is co-directed by Dillingham and Ivins.

“It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play,” is adapted by Joe Landry from the screenplay by Frances Goodrich, Albert Hackett, Frank Capra, and Jo Swerling. This beloved American holiday classic comes to captivating life as a live 1940s radio broadcast. With the help of an ensemble that brings a few dozen characters to the stage, the story of idealistic George Bailey unfolds as he considers ending his life one fateful Christmas Eve.

The show features many of the Playhouse’s favorite performers, including Jeff Goldberg, who plays your host for the evening, Freddie Filmore, plus another twelve roles. Frank O’Donnell plays Harry “Jazzbo” Heywood, the actor who voices the lovable Guardian Angel (Clarence Oddbody) and at least fourteen other roles. Haley Vonnah is Sally Applewhite, the actress who plays Mary Bailey. Jimmy Galaviz is Jake Laurents, with the herculean task of playing our hero George Bailey.

Ron Kurtz plays the Angel Joseph and the meanest man in Bedford Falls, Mr. Henry F. Potter, and more. Rounding out the cast of characters are Martha McDowell and Sheri Van Orden, each of whom play multiple characters. Cathy Pickren is our piano player and music director.

All of the sound effects will be produced live on stage by our Foley Operator: Steve Parrott. The show is directed by Bill Ivins and our trusty stage manager is Beth Perkins.

There will be four performances: November 9, 10, 11 & 12, 2023, curtain at 7:30 p.m. (Sun. at 2:30). Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for students (18 and under) and are available online at: 904TIX or you can call the box office at: 904-277-3455.

Announcing the return of the Amelia Island Songwriter Showcase, being held Saturday, August 26 at 7 p.m. at the Amelia Musical Playhouse.

The musicians performing include: Mike Collins, Tom Cornwell, Tim Dodson, Brenda Reed, Taylor Shami and Andrew Warade.

This fantastic night of music will be in a “listening room” type of environment. The music will be all original music presented by some of our very own local talented singer/songwriters. You may have seen these folks playing around town at the local establishments, but you haven’t seen them like this. They’ll be baring their souls in an atmosphere that will provide an intimate listening experience for music lovers, musicians, and for anyone who wants an evening of musical indulgence.  

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with a beer/wine cash bar and pre-show reception. Music starts at 7 p.m.

She Loves Me is a warm romantic comedy with an endearing innocence and a touch of old-world elegance. The Mikos Lazlos play Parfuemerie, on which it is based, has inspired many adaptations, including the beloved film You’ve Got Mailstarring Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks.

Set in a 1930s European perfumery, we meet shop clerks, Amalia and Georg, who, more often than not, don’t see eye to eye. After both respond to a “lonely hearts advertisement” in the newspaper, they now live for the love letters that they exchange, but the identity of their admirers remains unknown. Join Amalia and Georg to discover the identity of their true loves… and all the twists and turns along the way!

An intimate and touching show, featuring music by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick(Fiddler on the Roof) and book by Joe Masteroff (Cabaret), She Loves Me was nominated for five Tony Awards in 1964. TRU is being presented by special arrangement with the Estate of Truman Capote, Alan U. Schwartz, Executer.

Adapted from the words and works of Truman Capote, Tru is a one-man show which takes place in the writer’s apartment in New York City the week before Christmas 1973.An excerpt from Capote’s unfamous novel Answered Prayers Has recently been published in Esquire and the author’s friends, recognizing the characters as thinly veiled versions of themselves, have turned their backs on the man they once considered a close confidant. Alone and hurting, Capote consoles himself, with pills, alcohol, and chocolate truffles while musing about his checkered life.
